South East Development: “You Are a Man of Great Honour” – El-Rufai hails Bishop Nwankpa

Convener of the South East Mandate for Good Governance, Bishop Prof. Emeka Nwankpa, has once again reiterated the urgent need for the South East to take its rightful place in Nigeria’s political equation.

The revered cleric and foremost humanitarian made this declaration on Friday while receiving former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri.

Speaking during the brief but symbolic reception, Bishop Nwankpa emphasised that the South East cannot continue to be sidelined in national politics and governance.

According to him, equity, justice, and fairness demand that the region must be given its due share of political inclusion and developmental focus.

“The South East has paid its dues in this nation. We have contributed immensely to the growth of Nigeria in business, education, politics, and every other sector. It is therefore only fair and just that the region be given its deserved place in national leadership,” Bishop Nwankpa said.

He explained that the South East Mandate for Good Governance movement is not a platform for personal ambition but a people-driven initiative designed to ensure that the voices of millions in the region are heard and respected in the Nigerian power structure.

The former governorship candidate in Abia state also lauded El-Rufai for his courage, national outlook, and consistency in fostering unity across the country.

Bishop Nwankpa urged leaders from all regions to rise above ethnic sentiments and work towards genuine inclusion that would not only strengthen democracy but also deepen peace and mutual trust.

In his response, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai expressed gratitude for the warm reception and described Bishop Nwankpa as a leader of integrity and vision.

“You are a man of great honour, a voice of reason, and a bridge-builder. Nigeria needs men like you, people who speak truth to power and who are committed to equity and justice. Your advocacy for the South East is not just for your people; it is for the peace and unity of our country,” the ex-governor said.

The encounter, which drew attention from political stakeholders and observers, is widely seen as part of the growing national conversation on equity, justice, and the place of the South East in Nigeria’s future leadership arrangements.
