Trade fair complex demolition: Bishop Nwankpa commiserates with Lagos traders, tasks government on compensation

Convener of the South East Mandate for Good Governance, Bishop Prof Emeka Nwankpa, has expressed deep sympathy with the traders affected by the recent demolition of sections of the Lagos Trade Fair Complex.

Describing the development as a ‘devastating blow’ to the thousands of traders whose livelihoods are tied to the complex, Bishop Nwankpa in a statement on Tuesday, lamented the human and economic cost of the exercise, which has left many families in distress.

‘The demolition of the Trade Fair Complex has not only displaced traders, but has also disrupted the lives of countless dependents who rely on these businesses for sustenance,’ he said. ‘For many, this market was the only source of income and stability.’

While acknowledging the government’s right to enforce urban planning and infrastructural development, Bishop Nwankpa emphasized that such actions must be carried out with a strong sense of responsibility and empathy for the people who will be most affected.

He, therefore, called on both the federal and Lagos State governments to urgently provide adequate compensation and relocation support for the displaced traders, to cushion the economic hardship they now face and help them reestablish their businesses elsewhere.

‘This is not just a call for compensation; it is a call for justice and humane governance,’ he added. ‘We must ensure that in the pursuit of development, the interests of ordinary Nigerians are not trampled upon.’

Bishop Nwankpa also urged relevant authorities to engage in meaningful dialogue with affected stakeholders to prevent future occurrences and foster inclusive urban development that prioritizes human welfare alongside infrastructure goals.
