Statesmanship Over Partisanship: Gov Otti And Rt. Hon Benjamin Kalu showcase leadership beyond party lines

In an era where political discourse across Nigeria is frequently bogged down by partisan friction and political factionalism, the relationship between the Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, CFR, PhD, offers a refreshing template for mature governance. Despite operating on different political platforms—Governor Otti of the Labour Party and Rt. Hon. Kalu of the All Progressives Congress—both figures have consistently elevated state development above political division. Their mutual respect reflects a pragmatic alignment focused on institutional synergy, constituency development, and regional security.

A key element driving this mutual respect is the recognition of pre-political professional accomplishments. During a recent courtesy visit, Governor Otti paid tribute to Kalu’s foundational career, noting that before politics, Rt. Hon. Kalu was a brilliant lawyer with a high-profile legal practice, known for building and winning complex cases that amazed many. This acknowledgement underscores a shared trait: both leaders transitioned into public service after establishing formidable private-sector careers—Otti in executive banking and Kalu in high-stakes legal practice. This background shapes an approach to governance that values strategic planning, analytical rigor, and measurable outcomes over mere political rhetoric.

The collaboration between both offices yields tangible results across key governance pillars. As the representative for Bende Federal Constituency and Deputy Speaker, Kalu’s legislative reach facilitates federal constituency projects, infrastructural interventions, and empowerment programs that directly complement the state executive’s urban renewal and rural development goals. On the security front, during the Southeast Security Summit, Rt. Hon. Kalu publicly credited Governor Otti for significantly improving the security landscape across Abia State—a stable security architecture that remains the prerequisite for attracting investment and sustaining economic growth in the region.

Furthermore, by maintaining open channels between state executive power and federal legislative leadership, Abia State secures a stronger bargaining position for federal presence and socio-economic initiatives.

The mutual admiration between Governor Otti and Deputy Speaker Kalu serves as an important precedent for governance in Abia State and the broader Southeast region. When leaders prioritize competence, constituency welfare, and strategic collaboration, partisan differences cease to be an obstacle to progress.
