By Nwafor Richard Nwali: FCT Flooding: Demolition Is Not The Solution

Demolition is not the solution to the flooding crisis in the Federal Capital Territory. Destroying the properties of Nigerians in Abuja will not solve the problem.

A properly planned and well-channelled drainage system, backed by professional engineering and environmental assessments, will achieve more sustainable results than demolishing buildings worth billions of naira.

A comprehensive impact assessment of the flooding should first be conducted to determine the causes, extent of damage and appropriate mitigation measures before any decision is taken to remove structures obstructing waterways.
I urge the FCT Minister, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, to seek the advice of relevant professionals and follow due process rather than resorting to measures that may further impoverish already vulnerable Nigerians. Where demolition is considered necessary, it must be carried out strictly in accordance with the law and with due regard for human dignity and property rights.
Nigeria is a country governed by laws, not a banana republic where laws and human dignity are jettisoned for personal or political interests. Nigerians need a lasting solution, not a temporary remedy. Leadership must be about service to humanity and the protection of citizens, not the benefit of a select few.
I sincerely sympathise with everyone affected by the flooding and urge the Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to expedite meaningful intervention and provide immediate relief to those affected.
God bless Nigeria.
