Deputy speaker, Austin Meregini decries worsening erosion crisis in Abia communities
The Deputy speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly and Member representing Umuahia East constituency, Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie Meregini, has expressed concern on the escalating erosion problem in some parts of the state.
Throwing his weight behind a crucial motion aimed at addressing erosion crisis in some Abia communities during the assembly’s plenary session on Wednesday, the deputy speaker labeled the erosion situation a state-wide emergency that demands immediate action.
He pointed out that the state government has already allocated ₦500 million in counterpart funding since last year to combat erosion, regretting the slow response by the statutory federal agency, NEWMAP to tackle the erosion problems in some local communities in Abia state.
“Our communities are in distress, yet we find ourselves waiting for federal intervention.
“NEWMAP has become part of the problem instead of the solution,”the lawmaker insisted.
The deputy Speaker urged the House to consider using its authority to summon those accountable for the delays, so that the communities in Abia can finally receive the help they desperately need.
