Army declares three-day mourning for 17 slain soldiers

The Nigerian Army has announced a three-day national mourning period to honour 17 soldiers who were killed in a recent coordinated attack by armed groups in Niger and Kaduna states.

According to reports, the soldiers lost their lives during a deadly assault on military bases in Kwana Dutse Local Government Area of Niger State and parts of Kaduna.

The tragic incident, which shocked the nation, has once again drawn attention to the growing insecurity in various parts of the country.

In an official statement released on Friday through its website and verified X (formerly Twitter) account, the Nigerian Army confirmed the deaths and declared that the mourning period would last from Tuesday, June 25 to Thursday, June 27, 2025.

“As a mark of respect and gratitude to the gallant soldiers who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty, all military institutions and personnel across the country will fly the Nigerian Army flag at half-mast throughout the mourning period,” the statement said.

The army also directed all its personnel to observe the mourning solemnly, noting that the gesture reflects the high value the military places on the lives and service of its men and women.

The Army expressed its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the fallen heroes, assuring them that their sacrifices will never be forgotten.

“The Nigerian Army remains fully committed to honouring the memory of its personnel who gave their lives in defence of the nation,” the statement added.
